This handmade glass art is inspired by one of my favorite artists, Pablo Picasso. Inspired by his drawing featured in his “War and Peace” series of the early 1950’s, is sometimes referred to as “Head” or “Head of a Woman”. Picasso produced an extensive series of paintings and sculptures for a chapel in Vallauris, Southern France that explore themes of conflict and his yearning for peace. During our present day conflicts, I was drawn to making this piece to hang in my home as a daily reminder of my strong belief of equality and a world free of conflict. Using transparent stained glass adds the element of light I like to call “painting with light”. The organic effect of light changes throughout the day, effecting the shade of color and the reflections it makes throughout the room.
Each piece is meticulously handmade using the traditional Tiffany copper foil method. This method is a technique in stained glass where thin copper foil is used to join pieces of glass, instead of the traditional lead came method. This method involves wrapping the edges of glass pieces with copper foil and then soldering them together. This technique allows for more intricate and delicate designs than lead came.
